Major Browser Ships Built-In Content Provenance Labels for AI-Generated Images
A mainstream browser now automatically flags images carrying C2PA provenance data, surfacing an AI-generated badge without requiring an extension or any technical know-how from the user.
A widely used browser has quietly started labeling images automatically. Open a page with a photo that carries C2PA content-provenance metadata, and a small badge now appears noting it was generated or edited by an AI tool.
C2PA, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity, is an open standard, backed by a coalition of camera, software, and media companies, that attaches cryptographically signed metadata describing an image's editing history. Unlike a simple visible watermark, it can record a full chain of edits. It can also be stripped, deliberately or accidentally, at almost any point in that chain.
Checking for this metadata used to require a separate tool or browser extension that almost nobody installed. Building the check directly into a mainstream browser means the label now appears automatically, for any supported image, with zero effort from the person viewing it.
The catch: the badge only appears when C2PA metadata survives intact. A screenshot, a re-upload to a platform that strips metadata on ingest, or a deliberate edit can all erase it completely, so its absence proves nothing. Treat the presence of the label as useful confirmation, and its absence as neutral, not reassuring. It's a meaningful step for everyday AI-content transparency, but it works best alongside, never instead of, checking a suspicious claim against an independent source before you share it.
