Cyber Hygiene

The set of basic good habits, practiced regularly, that keep you reasonably safe online.

·1 min read

Cyber hygiene, much like personal hygiene, is a set of basic good practices carried out regularly and turned into habit to stay safe. It isn't a single tool or a one-time fix, it's the sum of small, consistently repeated behaviors, and these routines eliminate the bulk of everyday risk.

Core cyber hygiene habits include: keeping your operating system and apps up to date, using strong, unique passwords for every account (ideally with a password manager), turning on multi-factor authentication for important accounts, backing up important data regularly, not clicking suspicious links or attachments, and cleaning up unused apps and accounts.

The power of these practices lies in their simplicity and regularity: most attacks succeed not through advanced techniques but by exploiting these neglected basics. Good cyber hygiene protects both individuals and organizations against a significant share of common threats, and it forms the solid foundation on which more advanced security measures are built.
