Because macros can automate legitimate tasks, attackers abuse this feature to execute malicious code instead.
Macro viruses were one of the earliest widespread malware categories and remain common today, often delivered as email attachments that prompt the victim to "enable content" or "enable macros" to view the document. Keeping macros disabled by default, and only enabling them for trusted, verified files, is the standard defense.
