A cookie is a small piece of text a website stores in your web browser to remember information between visits, such as whether you're logged in, items in a shopping cart, or your language preference. Cookies are what let a site recognize you as the same visitor across multiple pages or return trips.

Not all cookies are equal from a privacy standpoint: first-party cookies set by the site you're visiting are usually functional, while third-party tracking cookies, often set by advertisers, can follow your browsing across many unrelated sites. Browser settings and privacy tools let you block or limit the latter without breaking normal site functionality.
