# Google Launches an AI Professional Certificate for the Workplace

Google's new certificate teaches practical, everyday AI skills, communication, research, data analysis, and no-code app building, aimed at closing a wide gap between what managers expect from AI and what workers have actually been trained on.

Google has introduced the **Google AI Professional Certificate**, a new credential aimed at teaching workers practical AI skills rather than the theory behind them. The program launched on February 19, 2026, and joins Google's existing Career Certificates lineup, which has already reached more than a million graduates worldwide.

The timing follows research Google cites showing a wide gap between expectation and reality: 70% of managers say having an AI-trained workforce is critical, but only 14% of workers report having received any AI training at all. That gap is the certificate's stated reason for existing.

## What the certificate actually covers
Rather than a general introduction to how AI works, the program is built around seven practical competency areas: communication, research, data analysis, content generation, planning and organization, and what Google calls "vibe coding", building simple no-code apps by describing what you want rather than writing code.

More than 20 concrete use cases are included, among them creating presentations and marketing materials, building infographics from research, drafting project plans and timelines, cleaning and visualizing data, and writing communications tailored to different audiences. The emphasis throughout is on tasks people already do at work, done faster or differently with an AI tool in the loop.

## Who it's aimed at
The certificate targets individual professionals directly, but Google is also distributing it through employer partners, including Walmart, Sam's Club, Deloitte, Verizon, and Colgate-Palmolive, so employees at those companies can pick it up as part of their existing training. A separate push targets small businesses specifically, delivered through partnerships with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, America's Small Business Development Centers, ADP, and PayPal.

Small businesses can apply through grow.google/small-business for no-cost access to the certificate, plus three months of Google AI Pro and three months of Google Workspace Business Standard. The offer needs to be redeemed by January 1, 2027.

## Why the training gap is worth paying attention to
The 70% versus 14% gap Google highlights is also a familiar shape from a security angle. When employees are expected to use AI tools but were never trained on how, they tend to improvise, pasting whatever's in front of them into whatever chatbot is open, without much thought for what that text might contain. That's the same pattern behind what's often called shadow AI: unofficial, unmonitored AI use that spreads through a workplace faster than any policy written to govern it.

A structured certificate program narrows the skills gap, but it doesn't replace an actual policy on what's safe to paste into an AI tool and what isn't. Training people to use AI well and telling them what not to feed it are two different problems, and closing the first doesn't automatically close the second.
