# CyberFirst: Building the Next Generation of Security Talent

The cybersecurity talent shortage starts with education. Programs that introduce students to the field early, and the research that supports them, are a long-term defense investment.

## The role of academic research
 Cybersecurity education is strongest when it's informed by ongoing academic research, studies on why phishing[↗](/phishing) techniques succeed, how attackers' methods evolve, and which awareness approaches are actually measurably effective rather than just intuitively appealing.
